FIRST TIMERS NEWSLETTER

January 22, 2010

Hello!  Welcome to our first-timers newsletter - a newsletter exclusively for those individuals who will be completing their first marathon or half-marathon on May 16, 2010.  We greatly appreciate you choosing the Cellcom Green Bay Marathon for your first distance event.

Between now and May 16, we will motivate you with inspirational quotes, offer up tips to prepare you for the big day, provide you useless - but interesting - facts, and answer any questions you may have about doing a marathon or half-marathon.  This last part is extremely important.  Do not be afraid to ask any question at all that is on your mind.  There really is no dumb question.

This special first-timers program started four years ago.  In that time, we have helped over 5,000 first-timers train and complete their first marathon or half-marathon.  Their stories are very inspirational and heart-warming.  We are confident we can do the same for you.  By May 16, you will have run farther than you have ever run in your life.  You will experience things you have likely never experienced before.  And at the end of the day on May 16, you will be able to say one thing - I DID IT!!!  You will be a veteran marathoner or half-marathoner.

INSPIRATION

"Nobody said it would be easy, they just said it would be worth it."  - Anonymous

This is one of our all-time favorite quotes, because it is so true.  Over the last three years, the most common feedback we have received from first-timers after the event was that they didn't understand this quote until after they had finished the race - and that the quote is totally accurate.

Completing a marathon or half-marathon is not an easy proposition.  You cannot just roll out of bed on May 16 and do 26.2 or 13.1 miles.  You must train for it.  We will help you.  Keep in mind that as tough or long as the training may be, it will be so worth it.

TIP

Use your long runs as prep runs for the race itself.  You have sixteen opportunities (long runs) between now and May 16 to prepare yourself for the actual race.  Use these runs to find out what works best for you.  Come race day, you do NOT want to try something new.  You want May 16 to be "just another run" (although we know it is not).  Practice what to eat the night before, what to eat before the run, what to wear, what to drink (we provide Gatorade and water - practice with these), what to eat during the race, etc.  The answers to these questions will be different for each person.  Find out now what works best for you and you will have a great experience on May 16.

DID YOU KNOW . . .

In 2006, Runner's World named the Cellcom Green Bay Marathon as one of the ten most enjoyable races in the country.  This followed a 2005 issue of Runner's World that recognized Titletown Brewing Company's Twenty-Six-Point-Two Brew, brewed exclusively for the Cellcom Green Bay Marathon, as one of the best schwags (perks or prizes) found at a race.
