A total of 100 U.S. military personal on the USS Green Bay (LDP 20)  will take part in the Cellcom Green Bay 5K on the ship’s deck on May 18, a day before thousands of runners take to the streets of Green Bay.

“It is an honor to once again participate in the Cellcom Green Bay Marathon weekend by running a joint 5K with the City of Green Bay,” said Ensign Tim Mahoney from Green Bay, who organized the event in 2011 and 2012. “Last year on our maiden deployment, we had tremendous involvement from our Sailors and Marines. This year we are running the 5K in our homeport of San Diego, CA, and it will give our Sailors and Marines a well-deserved break as we continue preparations for our next deployment.”

Participants in the 5K (3.1-miles) on the USS Green Bay will don official race bibs and receive finisher shirts and medals for their participation. Organizers of the Cellcom Green Bay 5K taking place on May 19 sent complimentary t-shirts, bibs and start/finish banners for the soldiers.

”The USS Green Bay 5K is our way of honoring the courageous men and women of our armed forces who put their lives on the line every day,” said Sean Ryan, race director of the Cellcom Green Bay Marathon. “It’s a small gesture for the work that they do every day to protect our freedom.”

Commander Putnam Browne, Commanding Officer, noted, “I have never been to Green Bay, but one thing that always stands out when talking about the people of Green Bay is their spirit. I hope with events like this, we can further connect with the city to enhance our spirit and esprit de corps.”

Ensign Vincent Rabe, of Marengo, Illinois added, “I am running the Green Bay 5K to represent my home team, the Chicago Bears, in enemy territory.  I am hoping this will bring some karma to the Chicago Bears to help them win a Super Bowl.”

The Cellcom Green Bay 5K will take place on Saturday, May 19 beginning at 8:30 a.m. The last chance to register is Friday, May 18 from 3-7 p.m. at the Prevea Health & Fitness Expo in the Lambeau Field Atrium.
