The marathon office has established the four exchange points and five corresponding legs for the 5-person Cellcom Green Bay Marathon Relay presented by The Business News that will take place on May 16, 2010. The relay will include legs of 3.5, 5.9, 6.9, 4.8 and 5.1 miles. As the event has grown, the luxury of locating exchanges at specific mile markers such as 5.0 has gone away due to the need for ample parking and adequate restroom facilities. Teams are encouraged though not required to use the designated exchange points. Information in their packets on race weekend will provide recommended driving directions to get to each location. Based on feedback from last year’s participants, relay teams will continue to provide their own vehicles to move between exchanges and there will be no shuttle buses. Marathon officials expect as many as 150 relay teams, or 750 people, to take part in that event this year. Click HERE for detailed information on the Cellcom Green Bay Marathon Relay presented by The Business News.

It takes more than a good pair of shoes to run a marathon. The body and mind need to be in the proper shape to go the distance and avoid injury. How do you get in that kind of shape? That’s where Prevea’s Pints & Pointers comes in.

Pints & Pointers is a free evening event series where experts answer questions and offer tips on running the Cellcom Green Bay Marathon. The series begins Wednesday, February 3. Sponsored by Prevea Health, members of the Prevea Health Sport Medicine team and Cellcom Marathon are on hand at each event. Most events take place at Titletown Brewing Co. so participants can relax, enjoy refreshments, mingle and learn from fellow runners. All abilities are welcome—from first-time half marathoners to veteran full marathoners.

Running is Balanced is the first event in the series, focusing on proper training techniques (pointers only—no pints). From 7:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Ashwaubenon Parkview Middle School, located at 955 Willard Drive in Green Bay, Prevea Performance Enhancement Specialists Mark McCartney and Vince Workman will discuss and demonstrate how runners can train their hip complex for running. Since the majority of time spent in running is on one leg, they will start with single leg exercises and work to dynamic plyo-metric movements. Runners are reminded to wear their workout clothes and running shoes for this interactive session.

Following sessions are all at Titletown Brewing Co., 200 Dousman Street, from 7:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.:
March 3 First Timers’ Session (AKA, There are no dumb Questions)
April 7 3G—Gadgets, Gear and GU
May 5 Drive, Grit, Determination…Successful Stories for Inspiration

The Cellcom Green Bay Marathon will shift to a two-day format beginning with the May 2010, with events going through Lambeau on both Saturday and Sunday race day weekend.

Moving to a two-day format will create less congestion on Sunday morning, which has been a concern for runners and organizers as the event has grown. Since its inception in 2000, the marathon has offered a marathon, marathon relay, half marathon and 5K on the third Sunday in May each year. The Wisconsin Public Service (WPS) Kids’ Power Run has traditionally taken place on Saturday but was based at the WPS Corporate Headquarters grounds in downtown Green Bay. The short distance events will now move to Saturday and the marathon, half marathon and marathon relay will continue on Sunday.

Beginning next year, marathon organizers plan to offer a new short distance event — a 2.62-mile “Mini Marathon.” This event will take place on Saturday morning at 8:30 a.m. and replace the 3.1-mile 5K that traditionally took place on Sunday. An updated WPS Kids’ 1K Run for children ages 5-10 will take place on Saturday, as well, moving from Downtown Green Bay to the stadium. The kids’ run will start in waves beginning at 10 a.m. Both courses will include a lap inside Lambeau Field.

By reducing the distance of our family event to a tenth of a marathon, moving it to a more accommodating time, and pairing it with the kids’ run, we anticipate a large increase in participation.

We do not plan to offer timed results for the Mini Marathon or the WPS Kids’ Run because of the anticipated congestion of several thousand people moving simultaneously through the player tunnel and around the field; it’s just not practical to time these events. We will offer prizes to the first 10 men and women to cross the finish line in the Mini Marathon but in general, the focus for these events has shifted from competition to participation.

Registration for the Mini-marathon and the WPS Kid’s Run opened today. All events are now open for entry. Stay tuned for more updates as logistical details of the two-day event are finalized.

The Cellcom Green Bay Marathon has selected Family Services of Northeast Wisconsin as the new charity partner for 2010. Family Services will join the Boys & Girls Club of Green Bay and Cerebral Palsy, Inc. as the recipients of funds raised by the 2010 Cellcom Green Bay Marathon.

Marathon charities operate on three-year terms, with one new charity added each year and one exiting charity each year. Charity organizations become a strong member of the operational team made up of mostly volunteers to put on this event. Family Services was selected from a group of 20 applicants.

President and CEO of Family Services, Tom Martin said that funds received through this partnership will be used to protect, heal, and care for abused children in our community.

The Cellcom Green Bay Marathon aims to give back to the community while presenting a world-class event for people of all abilities and bring visitors to our communities. In selecting a charity, the idea is to support a community need and a charity partner that would be able to effectively utilize the marathon’s platform. Family Services epitomizes what we look for in a charity partner. Although there were many worthy causes, the information presented by Family Services hit home as an important and seldom talked about need in our community.

According to Family Services, child abuse in Brown County has more than doubled in the past five years with over 1,300 confirmed cases annually. Statistics indicate that up to one in four girls and one in seven boys will be abused during their childhood with many of those instances going unreported. Funds from the marathon will also help with the building of a Child Advocacy Center for abused children. A planned collaboration with local law enforcement, healthcare, and county government will open a child-friendly facility where children and their families can go to report abuse and begin their recovery.

Welcome aboard Family Services!
