QUESTION OF THE MONTH
Friday, February 11, 2011

“I see that the Half Marathon is closed. Can I register for the Marathon and just run the Half?”

Question MarkANSWER: Not surprisingly, we have received this question quite a bit in the past week since the Half Marathon sold out.  The short answer is “NO.”  The capacity limit on the Half Marathon is set at its current level for the safety and enjoyment of our participants.  Allowing people to register for a different event and run the Half Marathon circumvents this effort.  Marathoners who choose to run the Half Marathon course on race day will be disqualified from the results and will not receive a Half Marathon medal or Half Marathon t-shirt.  People who are interested in running in the Half Marathon but did not register in time are advised to seek an entry from registered participants who are unable to participate by posting on the Marathon’s Facebook page and using the Marathon’s transfer process.

Distance Events Nearly Full!
Tuesday, February 1, 2011

Time is running out to register for the Cellcom Green Bay Marathon distance events. Both the half and full events are reaching capacity; the full marathon, capped at 2,500 participants, is approximately 78% full and the half marathon, capped at 5,500 participants, is 90% full.
These races are filling up at record pace, even with the expanded capacities.

“Last year the half marathon sold out on April 11 and the full marathon followed shortly after,” said Sean Ryan, race director for the Cellcom Green Bay Marathon. “This year an additional 500 spots were added in both the marathon and half marathon, and we’re already nearing capacity.”

The marathon relay, which allows up to five people to split the marathon into separate legs, is on pace with last year’s registration. This event also sold out in 2010.

Ring in the New Year by registering for the Cellcom 5K Run/Walk or the WPS Kids’ Power Run. Registration for both events opened New Year’s Day.

The Cellcom 5K will take place on Saturday, May 14 at 8:30 a.m. and the WPS Kid’s Power Run will take place the same day beginning at 10:00 a.m.  Both events run through Lambeau Field and finish in the stadium parking lot.

“The Cellcom 5K is returning in 2011 after being replaced for a year by the 2.62-mile Mini-Marathon,” said Sean Ryan, race director for the Cellcom Green Bay Marathon. “We hope the family audience who participated last year is equally excited for the 3.1-mile event.  The 5K, a popular race for short-distance runners, is truly a great distance for the whole family to participate in.”

Registration for the marathon, half marathon and marathon relay opened on October 1.  The pace of registration for theses distance events has been brisk, with the marathon at 38 percent capacity and half marathon at 28 percent capacity at the time of this posting. Registration is expected to pick up in January.

“We always see a surge in January as people commit to their New Year’s resolutions of getting in shape,” said Ryan.
